Projects | Test Page Showcase
Welcome to my Test Page Showcase. As the title suggests, here I've showcased some of the web projects I've worked on in the past, completed and incomplete. Many of these have been ported from my other server, or from the RAW files of websites I've already completed, and cannot connect to their intended databases. As such some of the functionality may be limited, but they still make for neat items in my portfolio. For those with live websites, I've included the links in the description, but the rest of the links are numbered and located on this server. Have a look and I hope you enjoy my project workbook.

  • g-aesthetics
A javascript test comparing the capabilities of jQuery versus Flash. With the rise of HTML5, the monolopy on animation held by Flash is rapidly diminishing. However, until all browsers concede on adopting the HTML5 specification in entirety, the reliance on a plugin such as Flash remains necessary. Still, its amazing to be able to create versatile animations without Flash. Following this thought process, I designed this jQuery test.
  • techline
This is an entire website I developed and designed for a parts manufacturing company. I designed their logo, front-end, and marketing images and content, as well as structuring and scripting their back-end database. The numbers display the different stages within the progression of the site architecture, with the last being the final stage. To view the live website, [ click here ], or click the numbers to go back in time.
  • carssu_web
This project is a website I am currently developing for the Caribbean Studies Student Union at the University of Toronto. For this website I indend to mirror the dynamic of the union by merging a very friendly and interpersonal feel while retaining the level of professionalism they possess. Currently I've designed a simple splash page containing the executive counsel of the union, but more is soon to come.
  • urbanaccess
A flash website front-end I developed for an urban magazine, with the help of three budding graphic designer interns. Upon putting our minds together, we decided to create a layout to reflect the magazine's urban Toronto scene. My interns designed the graphics while I scripted the flash file and input dummy information. Unfortunately the company folded mid-project, but I've retained the files to display our work. All-in-all, it was a great experience.
  • kfhtransport
This is a work in progress for an already established Trucking & Transportation company. I'll be designing and scripting the entire front end, including marketing content, graphics, and functional plugins. This work is still in its development stages.
  • princeofpeace
Showcasing a Wordpress Environment intallation and theming. This project is currently on hiatus, but will return during the fall of 2011. This installation and theming is geared towards a community youth group for their integrated website.
  • artofthree
This was a neat mini-project I created to test the communicative and interactive capabilities of Flash (Actionscrip3) and Javascript. I was able to successfully transfer events back and forth between each environment, as well as integrate Javascript animation with Flash eventlisteners, allowing for cross-language collaboration. This implemenation is fairly simple and created in a portfolio style, but the potential possibilities for expanding these findings are endless. It's mind-blasting.
  • sandpaper
When I was a child in art class, I learned the effect on regular paper that sandpaper had. I accidentally created a technique to digitally recreate that effectand decided to create a design theme suited to it. This is a simple, clean-touched theme with a substantial back-end for loading entries from a database. Some of the PHP calculations took me back to my Math and Logic classes, but it was definitely worth the added brain-strain. This is an HTML representation of the theme.
  • component
As an age-old fan of the Starcraft games, I was thoroughly impressed with the style and design of their game interface and related website. Inspired, I decided to attemp a video game themed website. I designed the graphics from scratch using both Illustrator and Photoshop, and again themed the design it for a portfolio. Link #1 houses the design for the sliding trays, Link #3 holds the console, container, and navigation, while Link #2 puts them together ands adds sound effects.
  • compaqblue
This display is a design project I commenced to try out some of the industry-standard graphic techniques used around the web to add a little pizazz to ordinary webpages. I added my own little flavor to some of them, aong with the help of the trusty jQuery library. This project also marks the creation of my very first (albeit tiny) jQuery plugin.
  • remote
Another unique portfolio design with a PHP back-end. Within this item, I've included HTML representations of both the user display and the admin back-end CMS. The user display featured in Link #1 is designed with a color-coded remote console idea which controls which items to display. The admin section in Link #2 (which has very limited functionality - its only an HTML repesentation) is designed with user notifications on the top, and a friendly user interface.
  • cryifiwantto
For this party rental and decor company, I have designed a Flash-based front navigation system based on the specifications of the request. I am also working on an online interactive registration form for Cryifiwantto, but that will made available for display once I have completed it ( with dummy data of course ). You can visit [ Cryifiwantto ] or you can click the number link.
  • orange
As creatively titled, this Flash-based portfolio project is starkly orange, my favorite color. Within this project I attempted (and succeeded) to combine all of my flash scripting skilled in the few week I had been tasked to learn Actionscript3. This is a port from my old server, and without its database it lacks some of its original functionality, but the highlights of this project to me are the environmnts, the navigational interactions, and of course, the orange.
  • metro
A unique blog/portfolio styled theme which I had designed for myself. It was originally inspired by the Window Metro 7 themes, of which I restyled, added new graphic icons and incorporated timeout slding bars via javascript. Each post page can be loaded seperately, or loaded inline through ajax calls. I also added a search feature to scroll the database and provide links in the same manner.

About Me | Steven Straker
I'm a freelance web developer and designer from Toronto. I specialize in writing both client-side and server-side script and have a knack for getting creative with my code. I love to test my limits and capabilities, as I believe challenging oneself is the only way to grow and improve. I love playing soccer, going on retreats, making corny jokes, and trading philosophies with people. While much of my expertise lies within web development and design, I also love to express my creativity through sound production, video editing, and creative writing whenever possible. I'm more than just a web developer; I'm a dreamer who loves to make his dreams a reality.
